A Sanskrit proverb for living in today

Look to this day,
For it is life,
The very life of life.
In its brief course lies all
The realities and verities of existence,
The bliss of growth,
The splendor of action,
The glory of power.
For yesterday is but a dream,
And tomorrow is only a vision.
But today, well lived,
Makes every yesterday a dream of happiness
And every tomorrow a vision of hope.
Look well, therefore, to this day.

Take Care of Your Art...

"Take care of your art and it will always take care of you..."
Writer Nicholasa Mohr told me these words years ago, when I was just beginning to make art after many years of wandering in the editorial wastelands. Her words rang true and I held on to them. This morning I remembered them again.

I spent the whole day yesterday preparing a Power Point presentation about my "trajectory" as an artist. I place this word in quotations because it sounds so grand, I cannot quite own it yet. There's much to be done, and I feel I'm just starting, but as I was trying to build a map of my route, I realized that at least I have something to say and to show. I can even stand in front of the students I will be facing this coming week in La Crosse University in Wisconsin and actually have something to share with them. And this is possible because I have followed Nicholasa's advise as much as possible.

Yes, my art has been taking care of me. It takes care of me by allowing me to have enough money to live, and be happy while I earn it. I takes care of me by giving me a way to approach life, something to offer the world, a path that leads to discovery, passion, and often bliss. But it was not until I started taking care of my art that this began to happen.

I take care of my art by making it to the best of my ability, and trying to improve and see my own shortcomings every time I begin a new piece. I try to accept every opportunity to bring it out of my studio and into the world. I invest time and money in it. I nourish it through readings, trips, walks, conversations, writing. I have recognized it as my spiritual portal and also as the way itself.

Take care of your art and it will always take care of you. This has been the best piece of advice I ever got. Substitute the word "art" with talent, passion or vocation, and I'm pretty sure it will still work: because to take care of something is to have faith in it's growth. And faith the greatest magic in the universe.

How to Be an Artist (Or anything else you want to be)

Do your best, but don’t try to be the best. That takes too much effort and too much judgment.

Don’t complain. This too takes too much energy and does not solve anything.

Instead, dedicate time to your craft, dream or goal.

Listen to good advice, but don’t compromise your values or vision to follow it.

Cultivate your relationships, your tribe.

Make decisions. Listen to your instincts when you make them. If your body is saying “don’t go that way”, don’t. There is always another way to get there.

Be practical, but not so practical that you end up frustrated. Take risks!

Be grateful every day. If you don’t recognize what you already have, how can you use it to get to the next level?

Share your work with the world. Be aware that it is your contribution to humanity. In other words, be shameless!

Above all, do what you love and love what you do. That love will speak louder than any words.

On hope

Sacred Poetry Contest (Win an edition of handmade books of your poetry)

Sacred Poetry Contest

I would like to invite you to submit up to 5 poems of mystical theme by email to tanyaetorres@gmail.com to win an edition of 10 handmade books designed especially for you by me, artist Tanya Torres (visit www.tanyatorres.com to view my work and books). When you submit your poetry you allow your work to be published in L.I.F.E. (Life, Interiority, Faith, Eternity. You may view the electronic version at http://lifeartandletters.blogspot.com/), a free publication I create every week as a way to bring art and poetry to my community here in East Harlem, NYC. It is printed in photocopy and is very humble, but made with great love.  Poems need not be religious or follow any particular path, only the way of love and kindness.

I hope that YOU get inspired to write a poem and that you pass this on to a friend. ACEPTO POEMAS EN ESPAÑOL (and ANY other language as long as you send me a translation!) All work submitted remains the property of the writer and I only ask that you allow me to publish it in L.I.F.E. Deadline: December 20, 2009 (My birthday!)

Here goes a simple poetry exercise to help you get inspired! Answer these questions, each answer is a verse of the poem:
1. Close your eyes, what do you see? (Begin with something concrete that represents an idea that is important for you) Yellow flowers grow enveloped in a veil of grey,
2. Use your senses to describe it. (Colors, smells, textures, sounds, taste) echoes of the wishes of love, surround with perfume their brief and immense breath,
3. How does it make you feel. Use a metaphor. They grow in me, as if my earth had given fruit,
4. What does it remind you of, where does it take you? I will not ask, whether their petals fall or stay, I know they will be gone, they are like any other, you or me.
5. Write a conclusion that makes the reader think about the ideas you are expressing or a question for the reader to answer.  But will their beauty revive their yellow hope among the gray?

City Garden

Yellow flowers
grow enveloped
in a veil of grey.

Echoes of the wishes of love of passersby,
they surround with perfume,
their brief and immense breath.

They grow in me,
as if my earth had given fruit.

I will not ask,
whether their petals
fall or stay.

I know they will be gone,
they are like any other,
you or me.

But will their beauty
revive their yellow hope
among the gray?

6. Keep it short, write more only if you need to. To get inspired you might also want to visit http://www.Poetry-Chaikhana.com, a website containing sacred poetry of all traditions and path.

Quiero

Read More

El silencio (Dedicado a la Papisa)

El silencio
sólo existe
en los recuerdos.
La vida y sus rumores
no se callan.
Pero buscamos dentro
el tibio olor de su certeza,
su caricia lenta y frágil,
su grito detenido en el tiempo,
su apacible y ordenada espera.

Los ruidos
con que corren los días
nunca interrumpen
su intensa honestidad.

Ugly Exhibit ? 10/07/09 : Currents

Mission

My mission
I realize
is to bring artistic creation
into people's lives
in the hope
of opening the door
to joy,
realization,
and love.

I do that
by sharing
my work,
techniques,
stories,
and most importantly,
myself.

(I could have just written a paragraph, but why not a poem para no predicar la moral en calzoncillos? Do not be afraid to write bad poetry! It helps if it is short!)

Cositas Bonitas que hice en Arizona

1. Ver a mi querida Daisy.
